Digital systems and blockchain for data exchange, stakeholder identification and access management in logistics hubs.

A platform for logistics communities
Logistics DataSpace is a research project involving M3S as a partner, funded by the Liguria Region through EU ERDF funding. Its aim is to improve the efficiency and competitiveness of logistics hubs through digital data exchange systems.
The platform is designed to provide services such as reliable identification of participants in transport procedures and automated access control for logistics areas.
Blockchain and goods tracking
The project envisages a digital ledger shared by logistics stakeholders, collecting shipment data in a uniform format. As goods move through the supply chain, participants add blocks of data to the associated information.
The proposed model relies on recorded content being unalterable and non-deletable, aiming to make information complete, reliable and transparent and to help counter fraud and illicit trade.
Subsystems and port access
Building the data chain involves integrating several subsystems within logistics hubs:
- An automated gate with hardware and software for early detection of approaching vehicles.
- Blockchain-based data and service exchange.
- Personal identification for gate access control.
- IoT-based terminal interfacing and automation, using RFID, Bluetooth, NFC, OCR and laser technologies.
The Genoa setting
Gate virtualisation and integrated identification systems aim to improve vehicle access management in port areas. The Port of Genoa was chosen as the application setting because of its complexity as an intermodal hub.
The project presentation records endorsement from the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, Spediporto and Assoagenti. The participating companies include Aitek, Circle, Click&Find, Hub Telematica, M3S and Selesta Ingegneria.
The historical description records a start in August 2018 and completion of subsystem development, followed by a planned phase of prototype validation and trials with Genoa’s logistics operators.
